Excellence in nursing education is an attainable goal. This article presents an overview of the NLN's Center of Excellence designation. The process of obtaining COE designation is described relative to the Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education and the NLN's Excellence in Nursing Education Model. Like the primary colors of the rainbow, the Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education offer a palette of primary characteristics that represent a level of outstanding performance or service that leads to excellence. The NLN developed these hallmarks to guide nursing programs in their pursuit of excellence. The palette reflects the characteristics of students, faculty, continuous quality improvement, curriculum, teaching/learning evaluations and strategies, resources, innovations, educational resources, and environment. The NLN's Excellence in Nursing Education Model provides a visual map of the road to excellence and reflects eight core elements: clear program standards and hallmarks that raise expectations; evidence-based programs and teaching/ evaluation methods; qualified students; quality and adequate resources; recognition of expertise; student-centered, interactive, innovative programs and curricula; well-prepared educational administrators; and well-prepared faculty.
